Quick Power for a New Idea! September 25, 2004 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This fast-action, fast-reading, fast-results book is more like a "Quick Start Guide to Being Successful at Anything." It is not an endless list of boring management stuff, but, instead, the distilled must-do elements for a new or renovated initiative. Business or service or internal project, it is practical and useful--NOW. This is now my most-recommended book for those who need to quickly change the world. Combine this with Robert Kiyosaki's _Rich Dad, Poor Dad_ and you have all you need to make your community a better place.

Practical, fun, and inspiring September 23, 2004 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
The Art of the Start provides real-word wisdom, insider tips, and how to advice for getting a company, project or major initiative launched. Plus, it is funny and inspiring, which helps sustain reading momentum and the spirit to actually do something with what I learned.
I'm inside a company, so the 'starting a company' advice may not seem applicable. However, the tips on making pitches to investors, hiring, and executing were some of the best intrapreneurial advice I've read. Every corporate manager must heed Guy's presentation advice!
If you're thinking about starting a business, already own a business, or are leading change, Art of the Start belongs on the top shelf. And buy some of those post it flags first...you'll mark several tips to reference along your journey.
The one book to read before you start your startup September 23, 2004 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
I'm now working on my sixth startup, an affinity network. Our mantra, as Guy would call it, is "the love you take is equal to the love you make" (The End, the Beatles, Abbey Road). The last chapter of the Art of the Start, Obligation, exemplifies this philosophy.
Despite years of experience starting companies, I still had things to learn from Guy's book, and it also was a great refresher course on many of the basics, such as writing a business plan. I've recommended that our entire management team buy and read the book. I write a blog about startups, the Digitalyst, http://digitalyst.typepad.com/digitalyst/, and it was a lot of fun for me to compare what Guy has written about, for example, the process of naming your company, with what I've posted.
I can heartily recommend Guy's other books as well, in particular, The Macintosh Way and Rules for Revolutionaries. Guy writes clearly, concisely and with a great sense of humor. He breaks up the text with useful tables, most of them very funny as well as insightful.
If you are going to read just one book about startups - and I don't think you should spend any more time reading, as Guy exhorts, start doing - this is the one to read.
A quick and concise read for the Entrepreneur on the Go! September 22, 2004 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Life is short, time is short, and one's time is better spent on 'doing' the dream than spent on reading how.
Guy's new book is the exception. A very quick read that cuts to the chase and provides insight that every Entrepreneur with or without a 'plan' should read, ponder, and then read again.
I would compare "Art of the Start" to the best 30 second elevator pitch I have ever heard. The content is captivating and the message is clear - I'll invest!! (well I did - $18, and I feel I should send Guy more money)
Excellent for any Entrepreneur September 22, 2004 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Guy Kawasaki nails it. This book is encouraging, straightforward, and helpful. I've started several businesses and a handful of non-profits, and this is the best book I've read on the subject.
