Perfect for aspiring entrepreneurs July 14, 2002 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
This book is a great book for young (highschool) people to learn the challenges and opportunities afforded in entrepreneurship. Excellent.
best of its breed January 11, 2001 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
This is one of the better basic books on starting a business aimed at kids. Clearly written and organized, the book helps any fledgling entrepreneur understand basic business concepts, learn how to read and understand financial statements, create a sound business plan, and manage finances intelligently. There are good resources suggested in each chapter. And there's a sample business plan and workbook included as well. Good starting point.
More Inexperienced than Young September 4, 2000 17 out of 18 found this review helpful
I still haven't taken the plunge in starting my own business, but I've been doing a lot of reading about doing so. When I picked this up from the library, I expected to take one evening to zip through it. However, it seems to cover the basics of running a business very well. If you have already started your own business, you've probably already dealt with most of the issues presented here. If you're new to the business world (young or old), this book deserves serious consideration.
Not the book for me. August 28, 2000 54 out of 59 found this review helpful
I am a 22 year old entrepreneur and I mistakely thought this qualified me as young. This book does have some relatively good insights on basic business priciples. The problem is that you have to wade through endless stories of other entrepreneurs, which often leave you wondering about their relevance. The stories are often about high school kids who make $30/week selling sunglasses or renting video games. I think this book would be perfect for a young person from the ages of 12 - 18 who wants to get a taste of running their own business and learn the fundamentals of economics. What I was looking for was a book that was aimed for someone serious about making their business their life. I think this book is either a 5 star or a 1 star. If you are absolutely clueless about economics and business and need to be motivated you will find this book very good. If you already have the motivation and possess a natural business acumen then stop reading this review, because this isn't the book for you, either.
Young is relative... August 26, 2000 I am a 22 year old entrepreneur and mistakenly thought I qualified as a young one. Actually, the author is really aiming his advice towards people of high school age or younger. Not that he doesn't offer good advice, it's just that you have to wade through story after story to get to anything of substance. This book would be great to motivate kids to start their own small time ventures and learn the basics of economics. This book tries to motivate you into starting a company. I already have motivation, what I needed was a get to the point serious guide to market analysis, business growth forcasting, and insight from someone who has been there. This wasn't the book for me.
