4 out of 5 stars A diverse collection of home plans   December 7, 2000

If you are one of those individuals who enjoys spending time studying floor plans, this book is definitely for you. As the title says, "1001 All Time Best Selling Home Plans" contains a huge number of home designs. Each design is presented in a similar format: detailed plans of each major floor, a short paragraph describing the design, and an artist's rendition (or, in some cases, a photograph) of the home's exterior.

This is a truly eclectic collection of plans, ranging from modest cottages to luxurious estates. One- and two-story designs, as well as designs for hillside properties, are represented. Another bonus is the presence of a great variety of architectural styles: Victorian, Pueblo, Greek Revival, Tudor, contemporary, and more.

The only drawback to the book is the fact that often more than one design is crammed onto a single page. Thus some of the details are hard to make out. You might find yourself reaching for a magnifying glass on some designs.

This negative point aside, this is an outstanding collection. It would make a great gift for someone interested in home architecture.

4 out of 5 stars Helps keep the most popular plans in one place   November 26, 2000

Over the years, we have picked up various "plan books". I t seems like there are always a few good plans in every book. However, the task does become daunting over time as the number of books in our reference library grows.

This book is very handy for keeping the 1,001 Best Selling PLans at your finger tips. The book is laid out well and the arrangment of the plans within the books sections makes sense. I particulary like the plans by Design Basics. The Design Basic plans are very popular with our clients.

The ONLY negative comment I have about the book is that when the prints are shown 2 to a page or 4 plans with the book open, the details of the plans become so small that without a microscope, they are very hard to read. This book would have gotten 5 stars but didn't, simply because of the microscopic plan details in many of the plans.

4 out of 5 stars Hours of house hunting fun!   May 10, 2000

The bulk and variety of plans in this volumnous catalog is tremendous. Most of the plans are legible, clear, and colorful. However, some that are printed 4-up on the pages made the plans "Barbie" size - impossible to read without a magnifying glass. You are reading along enjoying the homes and then suddenly come to one that is almost as small as a postage stamp! Without this one faux pas, I would have given it 5 stars.

Still, a must have for those who love to peruse floor plans!

4 out of 5 stars A Very Good Collection of Home Plans Found in this Book   April 13, 2000

The overall content and organization of this book was very good. It adequately broke down houseplans by their characteristic features and there were plenty of color ones in the beginning of the book as well. The sample of smaller and larger plans by the square footage was excellent. Some houseplans were fairly conservative and functional while otheres were luxurious and had a flare of uniqueness I found refreshing. This is a great book to get if you are just starting out to build a custom home and need an initial foundation to start your search. In addition, the book did a great job in the "Ordering" section. It described what you would get in fairly good detail when purchasing a certain housplan. The cost was similar to most other houseplan books. Overall, this book is an asset to those who are initializing the search for their dreamhouse.
