Stock selection made easy September 25, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
As well thought out and comprehensive a book as they come. It's not only the right book for our financial times, but it also proposes a systematic approach to stock selection that is invaluable to long term investors and shorter term traders alike. And it's all presented in simple understandable English, without compromising the sophistication of the subject, and with a hefty dose of humor to boot.

Several books try to explain how to find the next Starbucks, Google or Apple. They fail to explain the sleepless nights or panic attacks that go with those volatile stocks. Active Value Investing details the ins and outs of value investing, which usually has less movement and less headaches than the high beta names just mentioned.
If you are looking for an enlightening and interesting read, I think this is for you. Should be part of your reference library.
Not just another faddish "investment lite" book September 25, 2007 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
As an investment professional and former securities analysis teacher, I have a decent collection of "How to invest good" books. This is a highly-readable book offering timeless mehodology about a current topic. Whether the range-bound market thesis proves correct or not, the author provides useful practical advice and interesting anecdotes which distill the essence of value-based analysis. This is not just another story about trendy but transitory investment styles, but a text that provides clear, easy to understand, step-by-step guidance for analyzing the value of a company. Serious students of value investing will want to keep it on their bookshelves for reference.
Understandable, comon sense investment discipline September 25, 2007 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Mr. Katsenelson makes a strong case that the stock market spends more time in a range-bound mode than one of bull or bear. In an understandable, entertaining, and humorous way he details a common sense investment discipline, one that provides safety in uncertain and declining markets, and participates in rising markets.
Active Value Investing: Range-Bound (Wiley Finance) (Hardcover) September 24, 2007 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
Dear potential reader, Please, accept this review as a strong endorsement of the book. The book is enjoyable on several levels: a fascinating history of stock market coupled with a practical guide on investment for an inquisitive non-professional, and last but not least it is good literature. One interested in the investment runs into so many informative, but dry and difficult to read dissertations. Katsenelson's book is poetic , entertainment, and as up-to-date and educational as anything I read on the subject! Some chapters read like folk tales yet manage to explain rather complex ideas of kill-or-be-killed investment jungle. Well worth your time.
